An Art-Deco Inspired Study and Guest Room Transformation

This Balham study had started as an unused room in a Victorian terraced house. My client wanted to transform the room into a Gentleman’s Club style study where he could work from home, but he also wanted to use it as a place to relax and to host guests when required.

The compact size of the room meant creating a multi-functional space was challenging. As the space was to mainly used as a study on a regular basis, the desk needed to take centre stage, ideally looking out into the room rather than at a wall. The solution was to create a bespoke desk that used a swivel mechanism which created space for the sofa bed when required.

The room’s aesthetic is a nod to a gentleman’s club with subdued lighting and dark wood tones. The room was colour drenched in a deep teal which made the client’s feature artwork really pop. Brass details in the light fitting and hardware reinforced the art-deco style, along with the bespoke blind and cushions that were colour-matched to the paint. The joinery was the key piece in this room, expertly crafted by G&J Bespoke Joinery. We used a combination of colour and walnut for the shelving unit with a texture wallpaper backing. To take centre stage, we chose a beautiful walnut burr for the curved desk, with brass inlay on the top and along the edge.
